Facebook Messenger’s “Unsend Message” option is near for public

Facebook Messenger Unsend

Facebook Messenger is finally working on “Unsend Message” in the app for everyone!

Facebook initially announced that it would be adding the “unsend” feature for everyone in April after it was revealed that messages CEO Mark Zuckerberg had sent to other users were removed from the users’ inboxes while older messages that those users sent Zuckerberg were still there.

Mr Zuckerberg and other senior Facebook executives have been able to use an unsend feature for several years, according to an April report from TechCrunch.

Its introduction came as a result of the Sony Pictures hack in 2014, during which personal information of Sony employees was compromised.

“After Sony Pictures’ emails were hacked in 2014 we made a number of changes to protect our executives’ communications,” Facebook said at the time.

Tech tipster Jane Manchun Wong tweeted screencaps of the unsend feature in use on Android. When editing messages sent in a conversation, “Unsend Message” appears above “Delete Message.” If unsend message is selected, a pop-up appears, asking to confirm the choice, saying, “Your message will be removed from the chat, and you.” Wong also says that there will be a time limit for unsending messages, much like Gmail’s “Undo Send” feature that gives a 30 second window after an email is sent to unsend. Wong doesn’t mention what Messenger’s unsend time limit is.

In response, a spokesperson confirmed to a technology industry news publisher that “Facebook internally tests products and features before they ship to the public, so we can ensure the quality of the experience.”

There’s currently no indication of when this feature will be available, only that the Facebook team is working on it. So for now, just keep thinking before you text.
